| | Timanfaya National Park (The Fire Mountains of Lanzarote) The mountains were created during the six years of eruptions during the 18th century, more than 30 volcanoes were formed in an area of 50 sq. km. In 1974 this area was declared a national park.
The mountains create a unique landscape, rich in volcanic hues and textures. In order to preserve the beauty of this national park, tourists are not allowed to drive through the area on their own, but the coach tour takes you through the park. A must for all visitors to Lanzarote.
Teguise The ancient capital of the island has beautiful buildings all around the market square, with the old Church of Parroquia San Miguel and the museum of Palacio Spinola nearby.
Arrecife Arrecife is the political and commercial capital of the island. it boasts a population of around 40,000. Banks, shops, restaurants and bars are found along the promenade, and the two main streets of Calle Leon y Castillo and Avenida Generalisimo. Castillo de San Gabriel: Was built in 1574, it is been converted into an archaeological museum, and can be found by crossing a stone bridge (The bridge of Spheres), in Arrecife.
Not far from Arrecife is the airport, which has been completely rebuilt and which was opened at the end of 1999. It is a modern, international airport, with planes leaving and arriving daily, going to and from the other Canary Islands, the Spanish mainland, as well as the main cities of Europe, All well-known charter and schedule flight companies are represented.
Castillo de San Jose The large fort at the harbor entrance was built in 1779. Now restored, it is a museum for Contemporary Art. A lot is been done at this moment in time to improve the town and make pedestrian precincts, the promenade has already been improved, flowering trees have Been planted, and the centre of the town is acquiring a facelift and general cleanup. Slowly, what was just a jumble of odd buildings, is developing into a town with pleasant streets and squares, where one can wander about, shop or visit cafes, restaurants and tapas bars.
